The Weekender: Good Food & Bad Hair Days

$

This week feels like it's been a crazy mess of no sleep, rainy days (hence the bad hair episode) and crazy London days. Next week already looks set to be the same so I prepared myself by getting a good 10 hours sleep each night over the weekend. Lushhhh.

This week I had what could probably have been the best Monday ever - parties should always be on Monday nights, it makes Tuesdays far more interesting - I headed up to London to shoot some internal footage for work before meeting Lauren and heading to our (questionable) hotel room. We threw our costumes on and flew up the road to centre point where I definitely overdid it. I have nothing more to say on the matter. Apart from - I did get to meet Tanya Burr and that has pretty much just tipped me over the edge this month. If anything else amazing happens I might explode.

On Tuesday Lauren and I were up at 7:30 after four hours sleep and seriously questioned why we ever thought planning to go for breakfast before work was a good idea. We arrived at The Breakfast Club in Soho and swiftly changed our minds once we saw the menu and I had a coffee in my hands - I broke my one goal for October! *sobs*. Lauren went for pancakes and I opted for poached eggs, avocado and chorizo which was nothing other than amazing. After a long day of work I made the journey back to Brighton - Stylist magazine in tow (you don't even understand how much I hate waiting until Wednesday instead of Tuesday in Brighton) - and mentally ordered my dominoes pizza before I was even through the door.

The rest of the week is a fuzz of hungover feelings and stressful requests, I spent a good evening calling friends to catch up and let them know I was still alive, and made a mental note that I needed to go to Small Batch this weekend. That brings me to Small Batch. The place where food and coffee dreams are made for a super reasonable price. I ordered a ham and cheese bun with chocolate cake and a hot chocolate. I definitely didn't need to eat again for a good eight hours after! Small Batch's are scattered all around Brighton and Hove, so the next time you visit, hunt one down - you'll probably see me there!

This month was so crazy I genuinely forgot to keep a list of the products I've been loving! After taking a quick flick through the last month in posts I was left with the small edit above which definitely have been the cream of the crop this month.

It's starting to get a little autumnal now with navy nails and the Rimmel 107 making a come back, so I've decided it's about time I put together an Autumn Edit. I'll be throwing this together over the next week to distract myself from the fact that it's no longer October. *sob, sob, sob*. Best. Month. Ever.

The "I Couldn't Resist" Post

This weekend I threw caution to the wind and set foot into my local MAC store - card in tow. I'd use the word "oops" but I knew full well what I was doing when I left the house that morning. I'd been dying to get my hands on a new quad for months now, despite getting my little mits on the Charlotte Tilbery palette for my birthday, it just wasn't right for everyday use. Below I've listed the run down of the shiny new MAC quad, with two new additions alongside some old favourites:

Top Left - Grain (new): A "your skin but better" shade with a satin finish that just gives a little something to an everyday nude shadow.

Top Right - Amber Lights: An eye grabbing amber colour with a frost finish. Whether it's all over the crease for an evening smokey eye or in the outer corners under a matte shadow for extra definition, it's pretty darn versatile.

Lower Left - Charcoal Brown: A matte, everyday brown that can be used in the crease or through darker brows. My everyday favourite for, well, everything.

Lower Right - Smut: A dark brown with a velvet finish. Highly pigmented and perfect for crease work. I tend to keep things fairly clean and simple around the eyes, but if you're lusting after something a little softer, but with the same wow factor as black, Smut is a babe. You can also use it as a softer shadow liner instead of black. Endless possibilities.

I know what you're thinking: "what's happened to the old crowd?" They're safely tucked away in an old quad, awaiting a third new home and three more new friends. Did I not mention I have plans to be the quad queen? Wait and see ladies...

Coat: Topshop
Jumper: Topshop
Heeled Boots: New Look (via ASOS)
Clutch: Whistles
Lipstick: Topshop
Backpack: ASOS
Boots: Topshop

Autumn is in full swing and my Autumn wish list has grown longer than ever before this year. The office gets crazy cold from October onwards, so I'm on the verge of becoming a total coat/jumper fiend - with two coat purchases already this year, I now have my eye on a third from Topshop. My everyday black boots are also wearing away at the heel by the day, so a few pairs of ASOS boots may have made their way into my shopping basket already - New Look are a firm favourite with me right now.

Alongside the work appropriate purchases, I'm also on the hunt for a dress that will see me through the evening events of the coming months. My diary is the fullest it's ever been between birthdays and work events, and I'm looking for the perfect t-shirt dress to invest in. Something super versatile - smart, yet casual at the same time, but not too plain. After a good browse of the John Lewis website last week I came across this paisley t-shirt dress. Their dresses are perfect for the party and Christmas season (yes, I did just use the C word in October), and I can see this dress being the perfect party season staple teamed with a dark red lip (the Topshop number above in Wicked is my current "most wanted").

A gorgeous t-shirt dress calls for the perfect clutch to team with it. This Autumn I'm determined to invest in a Whistles clutch, as I've been lusting after them for so long. However, I may have to prioritise the ASOS backpack over the clutch as my city bag is starting to take it's toll on my back.

Clinique: Black Honey

And the award for my favourite product name of 2013 definitely goes to Black Honey. Sounds deliciously Halloweeny. Last week I got my mits on this and moved the navy nails aside (don't worry, not forever) to give Cliniques Black Honey* a good run. As if the name wasn't yummy enough, the colour is just beautiful, a dark cherry colour, perfect for autumn. It's safe to say I'm well and truly smitten.

Now on to the basics - wear time? Standard. It lasts a good three to four days (more with Seche Vite) but is prone to chips on even my short little nails. The finish? Glossy, but even better with said topcoat. I prefer a super glossy finish over matte with this one, but each to their own. But their selling point (aside from the beautiful colour)? The formula is meant to be great if you're sensitive to nail polishes (mum, listen up if you're reading). Lot's of us aren't sensitive to the chemicals in most polishes, but if you are then you'll know about it! The downside? My mum can happily start raiding my polish collection now.

Black Honey won't be going anywhere any time soon. But I must admit, I do have my eye on a few more of their polishes - Really Rio, Party Red and Concrete Jungle are all at the top of the most wanted. Watch this space...

Winter Warmers

With the hefty amounts of jumpers that are currently seeping through the doors of my wardrobe, you would never have guessed that trying to get me to wear one five years back would be like pulling teeth. Mummy October will fully vouch that that is in fact true and can't quite get over the amount of knitwear I currently own.

So far this season, the purchases stand at two coats and one jacket, five jumpers and (surprisingly) one scarf. There's also a special little hat/glove combo that I picked up working it's way to you too. So where have I found all of my little gems? I've got the run down right here:

Missguided: Budget friendly and always on trend, Missguided bring it in the "more for you money" department. A navy jumper, high neck jersey and grey cop have already wormed their way into my wardrobe.

ASOS: Coats and scarves. Need I say more? Definitely my all time favourite place for scarves. Go there now. Buy everything.

H&M: Coats, coats and more coats. Their knitwear has gone down downhill for me, but the variety of coats just makes my heart beat that little bit faster. From bikers to beautiful navy numbers. I love.

Zara: The quality of Zara pieces means I rarely have to buy one type of knitwear more than once from them. I've got cardigans from when I was 15 that are still going strong! I'm currently loving their super simple jumpers with a zip on the back. The quality is amazing, and at £20 you're hardly breaking the bank.

It's safe to say I now have ALL the knitwear. I am snugggggg.

The Weekender: Cocktails & Pancakes

When Josh and I moved into our new flat together, we would never have thought there would be somewhere nearby where both our food and drinks needs were fully met in every way. And then we found a little place called Slice and lived happily ever after. Slice is a cute little cafe, so small that you would completely pass by it even if you were looking for it. By day it's home to some of the best looking breakfasts and (most giant) sandwiches I've ever seen, and by night? Well, that's where things get interesting.

On the first Friday of every month they team up with a little ice cream place called Boho Gelato (if you're an avid reader of H.O you'll remember my visit to them back in September) and create little glasses of heaven. Hells yes - ice cream cocktails - strong ice cream cocktails. Each month they pick a different theme, this months being day of the dead, so my drink of choice was the Dia de Muetos. Ingredients included: chocolate, avocado, honey and cinnamon sorbet with absinthe, kahula & brandy. Sounds scary, but they always taste brilliant. Josh opted for a frozen margarita which is pretty self explanatory.

On Saturday morning I returned with Megan in tow in search of breakfast. It might have been 12pm but for the sake of the tiny bowl of cereal I ate at 7:30am with a fork - we'll call it breakfast. I went for the pancakes and megan opted for a sausage and bacon sandwich (yes, I did totally have order-ers regret on that one). The pancakes were nice, but not so filling, so my hunt for the perfect local pancake is still going strong (open to suggestions Brighton locals)!

The Video: Get Ready With Me - The Autumn Edition

After the recent avalanche of candles, curtains and flowers graced our living room, things started to feel rather cosy and autumnal in our little home. I spend most weekends in front of our little oak table - covered in beauty products and food, thermal socks on, laptop at hand, scribbling away for the blog. For this weekends video I decided to team my usual tea and toast routine with a few of my current favourite products (darker lip included) and a snuggly new sweater and shorts combo.

I particularly enjoyed filming this video so more like this will definitely be on the cards over the next few months. But next weeks video? It's haul time ladies...

Jo Malone: Peony & Blush Suede

When Jo Malone's latest release landed on my doorstep there was an "ahhhhhhhh" moment - no, I wasn't scared, think more of the angels singing kind of "ahhhh" - the kind of moment that indicates I'm going to love something. Why? Well, as if I wasn't already sold on the luxe packaging of the dainty little sample, the smell was guaranteed to reel me in. Hock, line and sinker. Peony and Blush Suede* is the most beautiful and sophisticated floral scent and has become a permanent fixture in my daily routine.

I'm useless at describing scents, so I've made use of everything the copy and paste function has to offer from the Jo Malone website (I jest, I've changed it a little):

Top Note: Red Apple
Description - "A crisp note that captures the mouth-watering juiciness of apple, opening the fragrance with a fruity twist."

Heart Note: Peony
Description - "An exquisite floral with delicate rose and honey accents and a subtle, green freshness. Fills the fragrance with the scent of peonies."

Base Note: Suede
Description - "A supple textural note that complements the floral opulence of peony and brings sensuality to the fragrance."

I think the full size is definitely one for the Christmas list - you listening Mum?...

The Style Post: Grey Knits and New Boots

I'm all about the budget buys at the moment when it comes to what I'm wearing, it's been difficult weening myself away from Cos and Urban Outfitters and on to something a little lighter on the purse, but I like to see it as a challenge - the prize? Being warm AND able to afford Christmas presents. Oh joy.

Lets start on the snuggly bit - Missguided are bringing it when it comes to jumpers at the moment. The charcoal grey knit above was one of three I ordered and fell in love with. It's not too heavy, which makes it easy to layer, but also works well on it's own with a slight autumnal chill. It also complements a leather skirt perfectly - which brings me on to my leather skirt. Another Missguided purchase. It rides up something awful when you're trying to make a speedy dash to work in the morning, so don't try getting anywhere in a hurry wearing this, but it is bloody beautiful and if memory serves me right it cost less than £15. Barg.

The last payday purchase, but by no means least were my (first pair of) winter boots from New Look, I snapped these up as they bare a little resemblance to the Acne/Whistles/Office boots that are doing the round this winter. But obviously for a tiny fraction of the price. They're a little higher than my everyday heel, but despite the hight they're surprisingly comfortable and I've been slipping into these on a daily basis over my second pair of (lower heeled) boots from New Look. Yes, I did go nuts in New Look and Missguided. Keep your eyes peeled for a haul this weekend!

To wrap it all up I threw on my Primark biker coat. I may look a little bit like a child goth in it but it's perfect for the current chill that's currently whistling through Brighton. It's safe to say winter is well and truly creeping in - prepare yourselves for the reappearance of the (faux) fur coat ladies...

Currently Loving: Candles

I know what you're thinking. As if a girl like me would ever not love candles? It's true I do love them all the time, but over the summer I spent more time using up my current candles than I did buying new ones. Can you even experience being in a candle rut? That's kind of what it felt like. But over the past few months I've accumulated some new friends (including a very yummy mint and eucalyptus scent which will remain un-photographed until I get down to some serious wick saving - it's currently drowning in itself), with each one of them settling in different parts of the flat. Below is the run down of my currently candle clan, and where they fit best into my routine:

Best for cleaning the flat days: My chalkboard cotton scented candle holder (top right) is quite possibly the best of the bunch, if not purely for its chalkboard holder (I haven't drawn on it yet, but oh boy do I want to). The cotton scent gives off the "we've just cleaned the entire flat and done all our washing" feel, so I make sure this is one that gets lit at least an hour before my mum turns up at the door. They're super hard to get hold of - I found mine in Homesence, but holders themselves can be found on Esty if you're a make your own candle kinda girl.

Best for cosy nights in (read: every night): A christmas candle has already made an appearance in the form of the warm vanilla Flamingo Candle*(lower centre). They very kindly sent one over to get me in the festive spirit and it's safe to say it worked. It's beautiful rich colour and cute gold detailing on the front gives the whole experience a very warm and cosy feeling with a sweet little edge. They also do a white tea and mint scent. My bank balance is totally weeping but my nose is going to be thanking me.

Best for working from home: A grown up floral number from Next* (top left) is just what I need to keep me focused during a day of working from home. The sweet side keeps it to my taste and makes my room smell lovely, but there's also something a little grown up and almost unisex about it so there's not one peep from the boy. Perfect.

Am I done? Is this years candle collection complete? Not a chance! Let me know what you're loving in the comments so I can add to the candle clan again this weekend. Sorry bank balance...

The Weekender: Not Going Out...

I like to measure a successful weekend by bringing it down to cold hard figures: Number of brownies baked - 16 (and that's just the first batch!). Number of hours spent in my pyjamas - 36. Number of videos filmed: 3 (so far!). Number of guests - 4. Number of hours spent outside in the crazy weather we had? 0. In total that's 59 things that make for a very happy Suzie.

On Friday evening I went shopping with my mum as I hadn't seen her in weeks (did someone say haul video??) It was lovely, especially as I'd been cooped up in the house all day - working on some very exciting things might I add, so keep an eye out! Yesterday was pretty much spent cooking, filming, baking and cleaning (am I a proper girlfriend now?) which you could probably see from my Instagram (@hellooctoberxo). I was posting photos like there's no tomorrow!

We decided against going out for breakfast because of the weather and cooked our favourite "at home" foods. Josh had a fry up (sans anything remotely healthy) and I had avocado on toast with poached eggs and chorizo. Sounds so weird, but I had it for the first time at the breakfast club in Soho a few weeks ago and it's now my new favourite! I was also really proud of my poached eggs (even though I cheated a little by using an egg poacher), my dad used to be a chef before he turned his hand to the world of manual labour and I've always been jealous of the fact that he can just whip them up perfectly every time. But I got them spot on and gave myself a good pat on the back for that one!

As for today? I have no idea what we're doing. We were up until 2am watching Brave (such a cute film!) so we're still in bed with our cups of tea and brownies. I might go for a record and see if I can go another 24 hours in my pyjamas...

The Haul: November

Without even being half way through November I'm already penny-less (as usual), who needs to save money for Christmas presents anyway? A love of shopping and a serious hatred towards being cold made me do it. Oh and my Mum, she was shopping with me on Friday so I totally blame her.

It's all about the jumpers, scarves and hats this week, and I didn't stop at the above video, oh no. Primark Christmas jumpers have also been purchased, along with a few bits from Space NK that i'd been lusting after for god knows how long. Boyfriend has officially confiscated my debit cards *sad face*.

Red vs. Nude

Red vs nude lipsticks. If you'd asked me which I prefer this time last year my answer would have been nude. Always nude. However my recent Rimmel purchases have got me questioning the old ways and I'm pretty sure i'm on teetering on the edge of a red revolution.

I'd been trying to hunt Notting Hill Nude in the Rimmel Moisture Renew range down for longer than I care to admit. *Sigh* Brighton is just not one for beauty shopping. The newly reformulated lipsticks definitely sit better on the lips than they used to which is obviously a welcome change, but once I actually got my hands on Notting Hill Nude I was a little disappointed, it looks amazing on Lily - which is where I originally saw this one - but does nothing for me even after breaking out the bronzer. The Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfecter in 03 definitely makes it a little more wearable, but it's got nothing on Hue or Shy Girl.

But my second purchase? In Love With Ginger. A super flattering orange toned red which just brightens up the face and is surprisingly wearable. I've been applying this on a work day and throwing on jeans, a slouchy shirt and hat and somehow manage to look somewhat put together? It's definitely love, and I pay have purchased another red just yesterday. Oops.

So, red vs. nude?

After more requests for an autumn lookbook/any kind of lookbook than I was able to count (okay, so more than ten...) on my last few videos, I grabbed the boyfriend and somehow managed to coax him in to an afternoon of filming my outfit - not once, but four times. Props to him for being such a trooper and standing in whilst my usual camera savvy pal was sunning herself in Morocco.

Above are the photos from the first two looks, the third outfit clip is the footage I managed to salvage from last weeks post, and we may have forgotten to shoot photos for the last outfit. It was very cold on the seafront, and we were super hungry, 'kay?

The looks are a mixture of some of my old favourites and new pieces from Sunday's haul video, all the info is in the description box on my channel so check it out and don't hesitate to tweet me if there's anything you want to know that I didn't detail!

The Bourjois Smokey Eye

$

It's not exactly a secret that I'm not a pro when it comes to eyeshadow. The lack of pretty coloured powder featured on this website is testament to that. After a good three years of fitting into the "beauty obsessive category" (which brings me to realise I will have been blogging for three years in 2014 - holy crapola...) I'm finally getting to grips with the whole more than one shade, defining and shaping deal, about time, I know. But when a one shade wonder comes along I cant quite help but revert back to the basics - enter Bourjois.

When my lovely lady Luce popped up a post on the Bourjois Colour Edition 24hr Cream to Powder Shadow (I'm never saying that out loud in a video - I can't speak at the best of times) in Prune Nocturne I couldn't help but watch as it fell into my basket on my latest trip to boots.

I've seen the texture of the shadows divide opinions a little, but I personally like the cream to powder feel of this one and find it surprisingly easy to work with. I use my ring finger to pat the product on to my lid and the product transfers from tip to lid better than a lot of other cream to shadow powders. I then blend it in with a Mac 217 before it sets. It blends out easily and gives a warm smokey gradient from the lash line upwards. Easy everyday autumnal eyes. (Excuse the lack of full eyelid shot here - I have some serious eye eczema going on!)

If you wanted to smoke it up even more you can run the product under the eyes. For me this technique is a one way road to droopy dull eyes, so I keep the lower lash line clean, and if I feel the need to smoke things out further? Well, that's where MACs Smut eyeshadow comes in. Yes, I know, a second shadow?! But bear with me here. Tucked into the outer corners of the crease, it adds a little extra depth to the eye and lifts everything up a little, perfect for taking one shadow from day to night. Not that that's happened yet, I've been off work so the most action this look got was a trip to Tesco, but rest assured it lasted (on my currently super dry eye lids) and stayed put for a good four hours - then I decided it was time for a face mask. As you do at 3pm.

The Weekender: Distractions.

For the past few days it feels as though I haven't left the house apart from the occasional food or post office run. Things are pretty crazy at the moment and there are lots of exciting things going on which take a lot of preparation and are causing more than the occasional twinge of anxiety. So what do I do when this happens? Re-arrange the bathroom and invite the best friend over for thai food and sleep overs. The perfect distraction.

I did a spot of baking yesterday and decided to capture the whole disastrous experience on camera (the last two photos above are outtakes from the footage). Oh yes, I filmed a baking vlog and it could potentially be horrific - do we want to see it? I made Rosie's avocado brownies and they were delicious!

Today I'm going to continue with the polishing of the turd (excuse the phrase) that is our bathroom - there's a reason it didn't feature in the flat tour and I've had enough! I'm also going to take my mind off my to do list and bury myself in the world of Pokemon Crystal for a good few hours. Nice and un-productive - that's the stuff.

What are you guys up to? Hope you all had a lovely weekend! x

It's no secret that I'm more than a little bit in love with high end beauty. It all started with being gifted high end goodies from my aunt when I was 15, and once I could afford Chanel... Well, that's where it all really kicked off.

Filming this really made me think about my favourite high end products and I was surprised by my choices on more than a few occasions - especially upon realising there are more than a few categories where the high street brands win without a doubt. But my love for Origins and Giorgio Armarni base products - not so surprising.

Don't forget to let me know what your favourite high end products are in the comments! Christmas is on the way after all, and I need to write my letter to Santa pretty pronto ;)

The Pai Skincare Trial

After a noticeable change in my skins behaviour over the last two months I decided to take the plunge and work towards switching up my skincare routine. I'd been settled in the same routine for a good six months, so with the colder weather setting in and my skin going a bit mental, I took it as the perfect time to test out some new products. Enter: Pai.

After being on my radar for some time, they got in touch a few weeks back and kindly sent over the Kukui & Jojoba Bead Skin Brightening Exfoliator*. I use two pumps of product, massage it in and remove with a clean flannel - hello brighter, smoother skin. I love this as it's so natural and gentle I don't worry about the exfoliating beads damaging or irritating my skin like others have done in the past. With that slotting nicely into my skincare routine I turned to them for the rest of my skincare shake up,

Although reviews of products are in abundance in the blogging world, it's still difficult to take the plunge when it comes to investing in new products, so when I saw the trial sample set on the Pai website I was sold. Five tiny pounds for six samples, free delivery and a muslin cloth? Possibly the biggest no-brainer ever. They should totally call it "try before you Pai"... (bet i'm not the first once to suggest that!?)

The kit contains:

  • x1 5ml Avocado & Jojoba Hydrating Day Cream for Dry Sensitive Skin.
  • x1 5ml Chamomile & Rosehip Sensitive Skin Cream for Hypersensitive & Redness Prone Skin.
  • x1 5ml Geranium & Thistle Combination Skin Cream for Combination and Oily Sensitive Skin.
  • x1 5ml Macadamia & Rose BioRejuvenate Cream for Age-Prone Skin.
  • x1 5ml Camellia & Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser.
  • x1 4ml Kukui & Jojoba Bead Skin Brightening Exfoliator.
  • x1 Muslin Cloth

  • The trail skincare set arrived in two days of ordering and although I was apprehensive about loving everything in the set (my skin is a stickler for not loving cleansing milks and rose scented moisturisers), my temperamental and angry skin was instantly soothed and hydrated and is currently sporting the most amazing glow even after around two weeks of use (I noticed a difference after around two days though)!

So what will I be purchasing in full? The Camellia and Rose Hydrating Cleanser is top of my list, followed by the Chamomile and Rosehip Sensitive Skin Cream and the Avocado and Jojoba Hydrating Day Cream. They work really well alongside my Balance Me Radiance Face Oil and Hydraluron (two of my faves!). The only thing I'm missing now is a hydrating multi use balm. If you have any suggestions for this, high end or budget then please let me know - winter is coming and it's bringing my random dry patches with it!

    Nars Red Square

Every November I seem to rediscover my love of a bold lip colour, last year I was all about the purple vampy shades and spent a small fortune on lip products in preparation for the upcoming trip to Paris and Christmas parties ahead. Fast forward a year and absolutely nothing has changed except the shade choice. Nothing. Even Paris is still on the menu. But more on that one later...

This year it's all about the reds for me, mostly I seem to be gravitating to darker, more vampy reds. But on one very drizzly day, post boring bank meeting, I decided to add a hint of sunshine into my day and might have had a little splurge in Space NK. I instantly gravitated toward the orange toned red that is the Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Red Square. Call it the lip sister to Essie's Meet Me At Sunset. I know I blogged about the Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick last week which is very similar in colour but hear me out on this one:

Easy to shape: The crayon/pencil application is far better than a lipstick bullet for precise application. This means I can actually make my almost invisible top lip seen in my videos *fist pumps the air*.

It doesn't move: Seriously, I'm a messy eater at the best of times (the food marks on our beautiful sofa accounts for this *cries*) and this stuff didn't move at all after I ploughed into breakfast. This is great for wearing to work, as my days are so crazy its unlikely you'll ever have the chance to re apply anything. The formula also seems to start out quite creamy, before setting to a matte finish. As a result this one never seems too drying on the lips, basically making it the perfect matte lip product for winter.

Being the girl who's slightly allergic to lip pigments (small face rash after long periods of wear - I won't go into too much detail), you know it's love when they appear in this little space. But now the question is - which other shades do I need?
